Gilmer County has immediate openings for Full-Time Animal Control Officer.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
This position is responsible for all of the daily job functions of an Animal Control Officer to include, ensuring rabies control, and performing educational programs regarding animal control and protecting the public from problem animals. Enforcing the ordinances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Monitors and ensures all animals are in good health, cages are disinfected and clean, and the animals are properly fed, watered and proper medication is given if needed. Officers respond to citizen complaints of stray, vicious, sick, injured or diseased animals. Works with authorities on various animals impound needs, issues citations, and provide courtroom testimony.
- Investigates cruelty and abandonment of domestic animals and livestock and ensures all records are in order for animals being held as evidence for court. Works closely with Gilmer County Sheriff’s Department to prosecute violators.
- Investigates reported bite cases and follows through with rabies quarantine checks, verification of quarantine, preparation and transportation of specimens to the state lab for testing.
- Assists the Director when needed with the euthanasia and disposal of vicious and/or terminally ill animals.
- Provides informational tours to schools and various community groups.
- Assists with kennel responsibilities as necessary.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. One (1) year of animal control experience or law enforcement experience preferred; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Pay Based on Experience.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Rabies testing procedures; Quarantine principles; Kennel procedures and principles.
Data Utilization: May use computer programs software and hardware.
Human Interaction: Tact in dealing with the public in stressful and uncomfortable situations.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Computers, euthanasia equipment, preparing and dispensing medications.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Light to medium work. Must have the ability to lift 80 pounds and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Sensory Requirements: May be subjected to fumes, orders, extreme temperatures, intense noises and travel.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
