HOTEL / MOTEL TAXES & REPORTING

Short Term Rental operators in Gilmer County are required to collect and remit hotel/motel taxes on all qualifying rentals in accordance with County Ordinance.

Property owners are responsible for monthly reporting and uploading documentation. Paper returns are no longer accepted.

Monthly Reporting Requirements

Operators must report and remit Hotel / Motel taxes for each month in which rentals occur, regardless of payment method.

Beginning with the current reporting period, all Hotel-Motel Excise Tax returns must include supporting documentation.

Filing Deadlines for Taxes

Returns must be completed on or before the 20th of each month for the previous month.

Returns submitted without documentation may be considered incomplete and subject to a minimum $5.00 penalty.

Warning

Please be advised that large booking platforms such as VRBO, Airbnb, and HomeAway do not currently utilize the GovOS reporting system.

As a result, it is the responsibility of each property owner to log into their Neumo account every month and report all revenue received from Short Term Rental activity, regardless of the platform used. If a platform (such as Airbnb) has collected and remitted the occupancy taxes on your behalf, you are still required to report the revenue for that period. When entering your monthly report, you will log the total revenue earned, but you will enter $0.00 for the amount due in taxes, noting that they have been paid by the platform.

Consistent monthly reporting helps ensure compliance with local tax ordinances and keeps your Short Term Rental license in good standing.

Mandatory Resources

Upload documentation that shows how you calculated the amounts reported, such as:

  • Platform payout or transaction reports
  • Monthly revenue summaries
  • Screenshots or PDFs showing gross rent and taxes collected
  • Management company statements

If you remit lodging taxes directly to the State of Georgia, upload a copy of your Georgia return.
